One of our choices for a day trip from Prague was to the macabre but interesting "bone church" in Kutna Hora. We had a private guide and driver to carry us there as the guide filled us in on the history of the church. The cemetery there at the Roman Catholic Church of all Saints there became a popular place for the devout to be buried after an Abbott there returned from the Holy Land in 1278 with some soil from Golgatha and sprinkled it on the cemetery. Later the Black Death and numerous wars created an explosion of burials, which necessitated the removal of some of the remains to accommodate all the new ones. This process started around 1400 and the skeletons for 40,000 to 70,000 people are estimated to be on display here. One of the most striking features is the chandelier which is said to contain at least one of every bone in the human body. A great day trip not far from Prague to enjoy.
