Launiupoko Beach Park is a picturesque public beach along Maui's west coast just a few miles south of Lahaina. Since it was the first sunny day drive we made since arriving in Maui, the water along the coast was picture-perfect blue and we couldn't refuse to stop at the first public beach we came across. So we made a brief stop here while on our way to our afternoon whale watching and snorkeling cruise aboard the Pride of Maui vessel in Maalaea. Plenty of local folks and tourists were here surfing and riding the waves. The winds were out of the south so the waves were quite big crashing on shore. Picnic tables and grills are available to have a picnic/BBQ as well. Lots of parking was available. Surprisingly the beach wasn't super packed. A great stop with time to kill.
The international airport the vast majority of tourists arrive by when coming to Maui. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the Kaanapali resorts on the west coast of Maui.
Highway that runs along the west coast of Maui. Traffic is usually quite heavy at all times of the day.
Resort we stayed at for 8 nights in the Kaanapali area.
Points of interest
Largest city on the west side of Maui. Downtown is a tourist trap full of expensive shops and art galleries.
Maui Dragon Fruit Farm
There is a small fruit farm on location at the beach, too.
Island is in full view on clear days from the west coast of Maui. Ferries are available to visit Lanai from Lahaina.
Launiupoko Beach Park is the first large public beach heading south of Lahaina. Beautiful turquoise waters and swaying palm trees witnessed from the road. We had to stop here!
With super calm waters in the crescent-shaped island crater, we sailed all the way out to Molokini to snorkel on the cruise.
Maui paintball facility just a bit further down the highway from the beach park.
Did an afternoon whale watch/snorkeling cruise from Maalaea Harbor on the Pride of Maui vessel.
