Even if you aren’t obsessed with loyalty points and frequent flier miles, it’s hard to ignore all those alluring offers: 10,000 points! 50,000 points! 100,000 points! What you’ll actually do with those points notwithstanding, these so-called sign-up bonuses can often translate into hundreds and even thousands of dollars of free travel, including upgrades to business- and first-class seats. Which is why it was so incredibly weird when, earlier this month, Barclays announced a new rewards card that would have no sign-up bonus at all.
