We have relatives visiting NYC for the first time, and they are coming with two kids, ages 5 and 7. I am wondering what kinds of cheap or free activities others have enjoyed when they have visited NYC with similar aged kids, or maybe if you have any tips or cautionary tales. I have really never spent much time with non New Yorker kids in NYC and am a little daunted. We will all be staying in Brooklyn, about 40 minutes from downtown Manhattan, if that helps!
I would recommend using this book or one that is similar: https://www.amazon.com/Mission-New-York-Scavenger-Adventure/dp/**bleep**6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=**b...
We have used them in cities in Europe and my kids LOVE them (age 4, 8, 11). It even makes museums interesting because they are hunting for objects.
And here is a good article on free/semi free family friendly things to do there: https://www.care.com/c/stories/6982/10-free-or-semi-free-kids-activities-in-ne/
Have a great trip!
Central Park has a great zoo! Also the chocolate factory is fun for kids: you can make your own chocolates and bring them home. And try the Disney store in Times Square.
Going to the Staten Island Ferry with kids that age is a no-brainer! They're sure to be entertained by the ferry, and best of all it's free!
Like the Staten Island Ferry, the Roosevelt Island Tramway is another interesting kid-friendly mass-transit way to see the city in a unique way.
