Ladies, take note!

Ladies! Beware in Rome when booking hotels instead of hostels and AirBnB. On a recent trip I opted for a boutique hotel instead of my usual AirBnB booking and was subjected to unfortunate and archaic views of solo female travelers. When you check in you need to have a man with you. Whether its a friend/boyfriend/husband or even someone you gave 5 euro to on the street. I was told they do not serve single women and was refunded my pre-paid room.

I spent the evening wandering streets and hoping a hotel would let me in, finally an AMAZING AirBnB let me make a midnight booking and she even came to let me in by 1AM. Still, not a safe experience and I’m lucky I found a place, luckier still nothing happened to me. The idea is that single women are loose or prostitutes. Very catholic, very unfortunate. Be prepared and stay safe out there ladies!

Has anyone experienced this in other countries?

Wow, sorry you had to have this unfortuante experience. I can't believe this happened. The only time I recall something similar was a time I went to Mexico City with a girlfriend, back in the '70s.

We had no problems getting a room at a nice hotel, but I remember the front desk person telling us that we would not be able to go into the bars unescorted, for similar reasons you mentioned. That's when mini bars come in very handy.

Wow, that is shocking! I would be very sad and if they use their faith as an excuse because the Catholics that I run around with would be appalled.

This is one reason why I do like to stay with certain chains of hotels. I personally am partial to Hilton because they seem to have a certain corporate  standard.

Although it's fun to explore local culture, (and I had a great time staying at local Mom and Pop hotels in downtown Cancun several years ago), at least a chain tends to have less chance of negative surprises.

Ah I had not thought of the bigger chain hotels, I bet it would be different. Rome and Paris are unique that there are hundreds of boutique/family owned hotels with 8-15 rooms. I've never been a loyalty member for any big names, maybe its time!

That was a terrible experience.  I like BelfryBat am partial to Hilton but have stayed in many smaller non-chain hotels.  In Europe and the US both, I have booked through Hotels.com, I don’t think you would have that experience through them.  You can even call them and check if the hotel has any archaic rules like the one you had to experience.  There are plenty of larger hotel chains that have decent selections worldwide and would more than likely be happy to cater to a single female traveler.  I think I would post the name and location of that hotel so someone else doesn’t have to go through the same experience you did.

I agree with Gefe57. It would be good to know the name of the hotel.
